Skytrail Canopy Walk: a morning above the treetops
A 900-metre walkway through old-growth forest, guided in groups of ten, with a cantilevered lookout halfway along. We booked the first slot of the day — and it made all the difference.
The experience
Check-in took four minutes and the safety briefing was refreshingly honest: the bridges sway, the mesh floor shows the drop, and anyone uneasy with heights should say so before the first tower. Our guide, Lena, set a slow pace and stopped at three listening points where the group simply stood still while she named the birds calling around us.
The walkway itself feels engineered rather than rustic — wide decks, high rails, generous passing bays — so it never feels unsafe, even when a breeze moves the spans. The lookout at the midpoint is the payoff: a full sweep of the valley with the morning mist still sitting in it.
What to know before you go
- First slot (8:30 a.m.) means empty bridges and active wildlife; by 11 a.m. groups stack up at the towers.
- Wear grippy shoes — the mesh decks are fine in trainers but slippery in smooth soles after rain.
- The café at the base does a proper hot breakfast and opens half an hour before the first walk.
What we liked
- Small groups, never rushed
- Guides who genuinely know the forest
- Lookout views worth the climb
What we didn't
- Midday slots feel crowded
- Gift shop is overpriced
The verdict
Book the earliest slot and the Skytrail is one of the best half-days you can spend near the city: wild-feeling, well-run and genuinely memorable. Go at noon on a weekend and it is merely good. Either way, it earns its 4.3.
