Sundown Camper Hire: hotel comfort with headland views
A proper bed, a real two-burner kitchen and solar power that kept our fridge cold for four days. We drove the coast loop — 640 kilometres, zero dashboard warnings.
The van
Our two-berth was three years old and clearly cared for: clean upholstery, a mattress with actual springs, blackout blinds that black out, and a kitchen stocked with sharp knives and pans that sit flat. The rooftop solar plus leisure battery meant we wild-camped two nights without hookup and never thought about power.
Driving is unintimidating — standard license, reversing camera, cruise control — though the high roof catches crosswinds on exposed headlands, exactly as the handover briefing warned.
Hire and handover
- Pickup took twenty minutes including the walkaround video they send you afterwards.
- One honest excess-reduction option instead of three confusing tiers.
- Summer weekends sell out a month ahead; shoulder season has same-week availability.
What we liked
- Comfortable real bed
- Fast, honest handover
- True off-grid capability
What we didn't
- Summer books out fast
- Crosswinds need attention
The verdict
The easiest camper hire we have tested: well-kept vans, no upsell games, and a bed you will actually sleep in. Book early for summer. 4 out of 5.
